Woods Point Campground

by Alex Bender

About half an hour west of Orbost on the mighty Snowy River is Woods Point Campground.

The drive in is very deceiving from just looking on the map – I wasn’t expect the last few KM to be so narrow steep & windy, but the road is well maintained but if you have to pass oncoming cars it may be an interesting time. Maybe a bit of a task for a bigger caravan but the smaller 4×4 caravans would be fine.

We came in on the way Google suggested – follow the Snowy River then continue – it gets steep and windy as soon as you leave the river, other campers suggested using the other road the google suggested – honestly I don’t think there is much difference.

Woods Point Campground is on the inside of a hairpin bend on the Snowy River with a beautiful sandy beach that spans for about 1km, plenty of space on the beach for everyone. Lots of people had kayaks & paddleboards and other floaty things. Its a great spot for it – not much river current.

There are lots of campsites – I’d guess over 20 sites, most with a fire pit & table

The whole campground is covered in amazing trees, which is brilliant for nice cool shade, unless you are trying to charge your batteries – everyone, be it fixed or portable solar panels, seemed to struggle. I wish I brought my solar blanket with me to charge on the beach – about the only place that there was good direct sunlight.

If you decide to venture for a drive onto the beach – be sure you know what you are doing else you will be entertainment for all the campsites.

Plenty of campers brought their dogs – some let them shit wherever they pleased which one time happened to be right in front of me, I saw plenty of it on the beach too. Please pick up your dogs shit.

There wasn’t much wildlife about the place besides a bloody big goanna that decided to check out our campsite then continued to check out everyone else’s.

There is absolutely zero phone service, I think you’d even struggle to maintain a decent Starlink connection with so much tree cover.

There are 4 long drop toilets that seem to be well maintained – they are fairly clean.

There are no rubbish bins – so make sure you take good garbage bags with you.

All up this is an amazing place – I’m guessing lots of people know about it because the place was bloody busy over the Easter weekend

Woods Point Campground in in State Forrest and from all I can figure is a free campground – The Yogi Bear rangers did make an appearance, they seemed to have fined our neighbours for having a fire unattended – so make sure you follow the rules.
