After weeks on the road, every now and then you find a place that makes you slow down.
For Dani Chook & Winnie, Charlotte Plains Station was one of those places.
About 50 kilometres east of Cunnamulla in south-west Queensland, this working sheep and cattle station combines spacious camping with naturally heated artesian baths, friendly country hospitality and evenings spent around the campfire beneath a huge outback sky.
Travelling Australia full-time means Dani Chook & Winnie have stayed at plenty of campgrounds, but Charlotte Plains stood out as somewhere worth remembering—and worth sharing around the campfire.

Would they return? Absolutely—even as full-time travellers who don’t often pay this much for a campsite.
More than just somewhere to camp
Charlotte Plains isn’t simply a campground with a few extra facilities. It’s a working sheep and cattle station where visitors are invited to slow down and enjoy country life.
Friendly lambs and goats wander around the property, adding plenty of character and reminding visitors they’re staying on a real station rather than a commercial caravan park.
There is plenty of room for campers, especially those who don’t require power, although Dani recommends booking ahead during busy periods if you do want a powered site.
Sometimes the best part of a place isn’t a single attraction—it’s simply the relaxed feeling that comes from having nowhere else you need to be.
Soaking in the outback
The artesian baths are the heart of Charlotte Plains.
Whether you’re soaking in the large communal pools or enjoying one of the individual baths overlooking the open country, it’s the sort of place where hours disappear without you noticing.
Dani summed it up perfectly.
“Just great taking time out to relax and enjoy the baths.”
As the afternoon fades into sunset and the warm artesian water continues flowing, it’s easy to understand why so many travellers stay longer than they originally planned.
Evenings around the campfire
As daylight disappears across the western horizon, Charlotte Plains comes alive in a different way.
During busy periods, travellers gather around the large communal bonfire near the bar while live entertainment fills the evening air.
It’s the sort of atmosphere where complete strangers soon find themselves sharing stories, talking about tomorrow’s destination and enjoying another night around the campfire.
Combined with spectacular sunsets, wide-open skies and the peaceful surroundings of the station, it’s an experience that’s difficult to capture in photographs alone.

Worth slowing down for
Dani Chook & Winnie travel Australia full-time, so they’re careful where they spend both their time and money.
Even so, Charlotte Plains was somewhere they’d happily return.
Not just because of the artesian baths.
Not simply because of the facilities.
Because every now and then you find somewhere that reminds you travelling isn’t always about ticking another destination off the map.
Sometimes it’s about slowing down, enjoying where you’ve arrived and sharing another evening around the campfire.
