Studio8 Turn a Bus Ride Into ‘Greyhound Bus to Memphis’

Some songs are written after the journey has ended. Studio8’s latest began before the bus had even reached Memphis.

Australian country duo Luke Johnson and Michelle Morgan were travelling from Nashville to Memphis along Interstate 40 in 2024 when the beginnings of Greyhound Bus to Memphis arrived. The trip made enough of an impression that they wrote the chorus while they were still on board.

Now that travelling chorus has become the second of five singles leading towards Studio8’s forthcoming Mississippi Dreaming EP, due in January 2027. Greyhound Bus to Memphis will be released through RTC Records on 21 September.

A chorus written on Music Highway

The route between Nashville and Memphis is often called Music Highway, but it was not only the famous stretch of road that caught Studio8’s attention. The people sharing the ride gave the duo much of the song’s character.

“We were inspired more by the other passengers than by the long stretch of highway.”

Studio8

That makes Greyhound Bus to Memphis more than a postcard from America. It is a song shaped by the small details and passing characters that make a road trip memorable—the sort of observations that can disappear as quickly as the view outside the window unless somebody turns them into a story.

Built to feel like a bus in motion

The arrangement is designed to keep the journey moving. Playful guitar rhythms and steady drums bring the rolling wheels to mind, while piano and fiddle add a lighter, more whimsical edge. Luke and Michelle’s harmonies hold it together, giving the song the easy chemistry of two people who have spent years writing, travelling and performing side by side.

The single was written by Johnson and Morgan and produced by Simon Johnson. It follows the recently released Nashville Nights, continuing Studio8’s musical journey through the American South and towards the wider Mississippi Dreaming project.

The next stop for Studio8

Studio8 are an award-winning, ARIA-charting Australian country partnership, with Luke on guitar and vocals and Michelle on keys and vocals. Their music sits comfortably between contemporary country, Americana and story-driven songwriting.

The duo released their second album, Moonstruck, in July and have spent 2026 taking the album tour through regional New South Wales and Victoria. They have also performed at the Tamworth Country Music Festival for the past six years, sometimes expanding their live sound with fiddle or harp.

Upcoming shows include Element Bar in Coffs Harbour on 18 and 19 September, followed by Flow Bar & Restaurant at Old Bar on 25 September.
