When Piper Butcher walked into a writing room with Kingswood’s Alex Laska, she was carrying grief, confusion and anger after someone close to her died by suicide. “Never Know You Again” grew out of the conversation and the words that finally came.
The Newcastle singer-songwriter released the single on 25 September. Its title speaks to the absence left behind, but Piper has been clear about the message she wants people to take from it: “The world is always going to be a better place with you in it.” If you’re struggling, she says, talk to someone — even if you’re afraid.
That gives this release a particular weight. Piper has spoken openly about the mix of feelings that followed the loss and how the writing session with Laska let them flow onto the page. The song makes room for those difficult feelings while reaching towards the person who might need to hear it.
A big year ahead for Piper Butcher
The release comes as Piper’s name appears on the CMC Rocks QLD 2027 lineup. She has also been announced for Meatstock 2027, following performances at BIGSOUND. For an artist from the Hunter whose songs have been steadily finding a wider audience, those festival stages mark a significant next step.
“Never Know You Again” is the fourth single from her forthcoming EP, Directions. The previous release, “Porcelain Pillars”, received ABC Country high rotation and reached No. 9 on the Australian Country Radio Chart, according to the release supplied to Country Campfire. It’s a busy stretch of music and live shows, with this new song bringing a deeply personal story into the middle of it.
