A quiet camp beside the river

Balonne Minor is the kind of place where the appeal becomes clear once camp is set up and the day begins to slow down.

Dani described it as a quiet spot right beside the river, with plenty of birdlife and space to enjoy a campfire.

The water may not have the polished appearance of a tourism brochure, but the reflections beneath the gums and the peaceful bush setting give the camp its own character.

For travellers who enjoy simple, self-sufficient camping, that is often more than enough.

Birdlife along the water

Wildlife was one of the highlights of Dani and Winnie’s stay.

They watched sulphur-crested cockatoos beginning to make a home inside the hollow of a nearby tree, while other birds moved along the river and perched above the water.

It was the kind of slow, quiet wildlife encounter that can easily become one of the strongest memories from a campground.

Lamb shanks over the campfire

One of Dani’s favourite memories from the stay was preparing lamb shanks in the camp oven over the fire.

The shanks came from the butcher in Dirranbandi, which Dani described as an excellent local shop.

With dinner cooking over the coals and the birdlife active nearby, it became more than simply a meal. It was part of the whole experience of staying beside the river.

Access and wet-weather conditions

Access to Balonne Minor was easy for Dani and Winnie in their motorhome during dry conditions.

However, Dani warned that the ground can become extremely muddy after rain. Travellers without a four-wheel drive should be particularly careful when conditions are wet.

The regional visitor listing also describes Balonne Minor as a free, self-sufficient campground about three kilometres west of Dirranbandi on the Dirranbandi–Bollon Road. It notes that the camp has no facilities and may become inaccessible during wet weather.

As always, recent rainfall and current ground conditions should be checked before travelling in.

Facilities

Balonne Minor is a basic bush camp intended for self-sufficient travellers.

There are no toilets, showers, drinking-water points or powered sites, so campers need to arrive prepared and take everything away with them when they leave.

Phone reception was available during Dani’s stay, although the regional listing describes reception as limited, so coverage may vary depending on network and location within the camp.
