Lone Pine by Poeta De Cabra is a poem of remembrance, reflecting on the soldiers lost at Gallipoli and the pine that stands in their memory.
Looking across the graves beneath its branches, the poet sees the tree as a protector and a lasting tribute to those who never came home.
Lone Pine
By Poeta De Cabra
Lone Pine stands there, and still thrives
where many Anzacs and Turks lost their lives
Lots of soldiers shot and many close shaves
under the tree, are many hundreds of graves
Lone Pine marks a memorable piece of history
where for a few days they fought there at Gallipoli
Battle was won by Anzacs but at an incredible cost
many soldiers injured and died, even the pine was lost
Another Lone Pine was planted there in nineteen-twenty
planted there for the soldiers and still there, in their memory
August offensive it was, fought in Gallipoli in First World War
won by brave men from Australian and New Zealand Army Corps
Was a terrible battle with each side suffering heavy loss
seven brave Aussie soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross
The battle will always be remembered as a very sad time
in remembrance, folk now proudly look after the Lone Pine
Lone Pine may not be known by a lot of people worldwide
Aussies and Kiwis show it respect, remember it with pride
I personally am very glad that the new Lone Pine was grown
reminds us of all, the lost soldiers who died, many unknown
Lone Pine stands above all the graves, protector, a shroud
has stood there for over a hundred years, lonely but proud
Those soldiers fought for freedom but are never coming back
Lone pine is a tribute, not only to them, but to every ANZAC
