Some songs visit a town. FRECKO’s new single Junee uses one railway stop to carry the weight of an entire journey home.
The father-and-son duo of Jason and Jack Freckelton return on 28 September with a song drawn from one of Australia’s darkest naval chapters — and from the life of a man who survived it by the narrowest turn of fate.
A survivor’s journey through Junee
In November 1941, HMAS Sydney was lost after its battle with the German raider Kormoran off the Western Australian coast. All 645 men aboard the Australian cruiser were killed, making it the nation’s worst naval disaster.
Junee follows the story of a naval officer whose fate placed him aboard another ship before Sydney made her final voyage. After three gruelling years at sea, he is granted just 72 hours of leave and begins the exhausting trip toward Sydney — worn down, short on sleep and determined to pay his respects to the mates who never came home.
That makes Junee more than a name on the railway line. In the song, it becomes a point between war and home, survival and loss — the kind of ordinary Australian place that can quietly hold an extraordinary story.
Fiddle, pedal steel and a story that keeps moving
FRECKO have not turned the story into a slow, heavy memorial. Instead, they set its solemn heart against an upbeat, chorus-driven arrangement coloured by fiddle and pedal steel.
That contrast gives Junee its bite: the wheels keep turning and the journey keeps moving, even while memory pulls the survivor back toward the men who were lost.
It is a deeply Australian way to tell the story — without overplaying it, and without forgetting the human being at its centre.
Two generations, one Australian voice
Jason and Jack Freckelton have been playing music together for more than 15 years. Based between the NSW Central Coast and Sydney’s Inner West, the pair have built their sound around alt-country, folk and blues, with a shared fascination for Australian characters in all their strengths, flaws and hard-earned stories.
Their debut album, Dreams Are Hard to Sell, arrived during the 2025 Tamworth Country Music Festival. A year later came Cowboy Is a State of Mind, led by songs including Nashville, Bondi, Me & My Boy and Concrete Cowboy. Both albums climbed to No. 1 on Australian ARIA country charts.
Junee feels like a natural next step: a true Australian story carried by a father and son who understand how much history can live inside a few minutes of music.
